Quick Voice Tips: Reflect On Your Own Diet

to give up everything joyful for the sake of your voice. No coffee. No dairy. No wine. No fun.

I love a good vocal care chat as much as the next voice geek, but let’s be honest, a lot of the advice floating around online is questionable. Outdated. Or simply not relevant to you and your lovely, individual body.

So before you ditch your whole milk latte or start ordering some mystical mountain tea that promises to “lubricate your cords,” take a breath. Let’s talk about what actually matters.

Don’t believe everything you read online

The internet is full of people shouting (ironically) about what you should or shouldn’t do with your voice. Most of it’s well-meaning, but it’s rarely one-size-fits-all.

You’ve probably seen things like:

☕ “Never drink coffee!”

🥛 “Avoid dairy forever!”

🌶️ “Cut out spicy food completely!”

🍵 “Drink this ancient herbal tea from a faraway land!”

Sound familiar?

Sure, some of these might help some people, but applying them blindly can cause more stress than good. And stress, funnily enough, isn’t great for your voice either.

Do your own detective work

If your voice feels off, get curious. How does it behave after certain foods or drinks? What’s your energy like? Are you hydrated? How’s your digestion?

Science is brilliant, but experience is too. You live in your body every day, so you’re the expert on how it responds.

Coffee might make reflux worse for some, but others sip it happily without a hitch. Dairy might make one singer feel a bit phlegmy, while another feels nothing at all. Spicy food might be your downfall or your delight.

The trick is to notice your patterns before you overhaul your diet completely. Your system will tell you what’s up if you listen.

Balance and awareness over extremes

Eating well supports your overall energy, which supports your voice. But honestly, balance matters more than perfection.

If you love your morning flat white, have it. If a curry brings you joy, eat it. Just notice how you feel after and make small tweaks if needed. Your voice is part of a living, breathing system, not a robot that needs calibrating every time you fancy a pizza.

If reflux or dryness crops up, simple changes can make a big difference. Stay hydrated, avoid heavy late-night meals, and give your system time to rest. No need to live in fear of cheese. Nobody wants that life.

Science + self-awareness = sustainability

Vocal health isn’t about deprivation, it’s about connection. It’s about noticing how what you eat, drink, and do affects how your voice feels and performs.

Try a gentle experiment. Keep a little voice diary for a couple of weeks. Note what you eat and drink, when your voice feels free, strong, tired, or sticky. Over time, you’ll see what actually affects you and what doesn’t.
