I had never worked 1 on 1 with a coach before and certainly had problems with confidence and a lack of awareness. I was also worried that I sounded dull and monotonous instead of expressive and interesting. I also feared the unknown, worrying I might be judged as not having the potential to grow into a voiceover artist.
Whether it be an individual session or a group course, the feelings afterwards are always the same – excitement, relief, joy, positivity, self-confidence, and inspired to work on my own on whatever topic or item was covered.
Sometimes there were things I was doing that didn’t work or didn’t sound right for the part or accent, and the kind way I was directed to hear or feel what I was doing and then given techniques to change was gentle and always full of kindness.
If you’re considering a coach or course for voice, accents, voiceover performance, physical awareness, and more I would say to give Nic a call straight away. Squash any fears about contacting someone new, because Nic will make you feel like a good mate in no time at all. And in addition to the coaching and courses which are a great value, you get that augmented by multiple podcasts she hosts. I unashamedly recommend Nic to everyone I know.
Some recommend working with a seasoned professional who is actively voicing in the market. Others recommend looking for someone you get along with so you look forward to the guidance. What I like most is that with Nic I got the absolute best of both!
I feel like I found a top-notch expert in her field who is also your best friend laughing at toddler farts and doing gymnastics with the tongue in front of a camera. I learn the best when I’m comfortable trying something new and not worry about how ridiculous I may sound or look, and this has been my experience working with Nic.
Very quickly I was able to identify some common patterns in scripts and recognise how to approach them. Items like lists (most often in threes), comparisons, and even making a pretty good guess after a single read-through on the tone of voice that fit the copy best. Working with Nic early in my training was like a jolt of energy to bolt me forward and keep me going.
